Full disclosure…. although we are both dancers, we are not regular viewers of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars when we heard they were having a Disney night, we filled up a couple of glasses of wine and watched in anticipation.
The evening was kicked off by Carlton… excuse me Alfonso Ribeiro (But really… Carlton) performing an original song, accompanied by one of my favorite little dancers from So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, J.T.
The song was super cute and the group dance was enjoyable… as long as Nick Viall wasn’t on screen. But more about that later.
First up was a Foxtrot to “Evermore” from the new live-action Beauty and the Beast. This is one of my favorite songs from the film… and while the Emma and Rashad both looked fantastic, it felt a little off to me. This song is about losing the person you love and waiting for them to return to you for forever. But they had smiles on their faces the entire time. If they wanted to do something happy, they should have stuck with the Beauty and the Beast theme song. I wasn’t buying anything about this dance despite the fact that their technique was well executed.
Next up was my least favorite person on the planet… Nick Viall. To be clear, I am a huge fan of The Bachelor and all its spin offs. I definitely have my favorites. Nick is not one of them. I feel like everything he does is for attention and none of his actions or decisions seems sincere. And I get it, you don’t go on The Bachelor if you don’t want attention. But the insincerity in all of his actions just makes me want to kick a wall. This didn’t change with his dancing. He and his partner Peta danced to “I’ve Got No Strings” from Pinocchio (and given Nick’s insincerity… I have a feeling that if he was Pinocchio, his nose would be longer than the sum of other parts) and I spent the whole dance wishing that he just wasn’t a real boy. So my review of this performance is probably skewed and biased but, whatever.
A Real Housewife and some guy named Gleb were up next. They danced to “Unforgettable” from Finding Dory. Unfortunately, it was pretty forgettable because I literally remember nothing from this dance other than her dress had sparkles.
Next was Brittany… I’m sorry Heather Morris, and her back up partner Alan. They did a jazz dance to “For the First Time in Forever”…. ok who listens to this music and thinks ‘oh yeah! Jazz!’ Her main partner/choreographer really dropped the ball on this. Brittany… I mean Heather, is a professional dancer. She is amazing. She can do jazz the way Christina Aguilera can do vocal runs. And yet you had her running around stage clumsily, barely dancing at all. Missed opportunity. The plus side, is that Brittany… I mean Heather, makes and AMAZING Anna.
After “For the First Time in Forever,” came a number to “When Can I See You Again?” from Wreck it Ralph. I love this song and this movie. And I have to hand it to the Star, Bonner Bolton, with this number. His spine is literally filled with metal from a bull riding accident and he was a fantastic partner. His personality fell flat a lot. But giving him props to being up there and showing some great technique with all the obstacles he has against him.
“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” came next, accompanied by Donny Osmond himself, Normani and Val got out there and stayed. This was the most enjoyable performance of the night by far. Not only did they do a flawless Paso, they did karate and didn’t kill each other with those martial arts stick things. I keep watching this dance on repeat. It’s so powerful. Julianne told Normani that all girls should watch this dance and aspire to be her. And I agree. Girl Power at its finest!
Next, an older guy who I think was a baseball player and a blonde girl did a dance to a song that will be coming out with Cars 3. I think I went to get more wine at this point. They wore race car driver costumes that looked like Lightening McQueen. That’s all I can say.
Nancy Kerrigan and Artem did a fun group dance to “That’s How You Know,” From Enchanted. She made a lovely Giselle and their dance was fun to watch. I have been on a big Enchanted kick lately so it was fun to see this brought to life!
Last, but not least, was the amazing Simone Biles and her partner Sasha performing to “How Far Will I Go,” with Auli’i Cravalho accompanying them. This dance was amazing. Simone was born to jump. She literally flies through the air. I do wish her transitions were a bit more graceful… but she is a gymnast. The choreography was beautiful. Auli’i was beautiful. I can’t listen to this song without getting chills and this performance didn’t disappoint.
Who did you think killed it on Disney night?
